Recently, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) surveillance has indicated an increased spread of Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV)1. RSV is a common respiratory virus that usually causes mild, cold-like symptoms, from which most people recover in a week or two. RSV is the most common cause of more severe infections such as bronchiolitis and pneumonia in children younger than one year of age in the United States. RSV can survive for many hours on hard surfaces, such as tables and crib rails. It typically lives on soft surfaces such as tissues and hands for shorter amounts of time. A significant cause of transmission is through surface contact, as well as through person-to-person contact.
To prevent RSV, the CDC recommends the following guidelines2:
- Clean frequently touched surfaces such as doorknobs and mobile
- Cover your coughs and sneezes with a tissue or your upper shirt sleeve, not your
- Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20
- Avoid close contact such as kissing, shaking hands, and sharing cups and eating utensils with
