Operational Issues

Crude oil contains paraffins that are soluble in oil under reservoir conditions but they also precipitate and deposit onto tubing during production, restricting hydrocarbon flow.

Paraffin deposition can lead to equipment failure, production decline, expensive remediations, well shut-in, and storage tank plugging.

Expensive Problem for E & P

Best-in-class paraffin inhibitors (PIs) are polymer-based systems, which tend to be very expensive products due to their unique architecture.

Solutions are Costly

Minimal Deposition

Pilot® Wax Control significantly outperforms commercial PIs, as it leaves a clean cold finger with minimal paraffin deposition. 

Fig. B shows the results of a modified cold finger test (CFT) using crude oil and wax samples from a Permian Basin reservoir for different PIs with the same product dosage of 250 ppm.

Robust and Cost Effective

Figure C shows paraffin inhibition performance by chemical cost for different PI formulations. Pilot® Wax Control shows the maximum cost-performance benefit and outperforms other formulations. It offers a cost-effective solution to tackle tough paraffin-related production issues.

Dr. Singh is a research scientist at Pilot Chemical Company in the oil & gas division at the Pilot Innovation Center in Pittsburgh. His work is focused on research and new product development for improved oil recovery in conventional and unconventional reservoirs and paraffin inhibition for flow assurance and corrosion inhibition. He received his Ph.D. and M.S. in Petroleum Engineering from the University of Texas at Austin. His research interests include chemical- and gas-enhanced oil recovery, unconventional EOR, nanotechnology, colloids, reservoir simulation, and shale stimulation. He has published over 23 journal and conference papers and filed 4 patents in these areas. He holds a B.Tech. degree in Chemical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur. He has previously worked in downstream industry as well.
